Who Remembers The 2000 Train Wreck ‘Who Wants To Marry A Multi-Millionaire?’

darva conger, rick rockwell, A few memes floating the internet about ‘The Bachelor’ remind me of the show that started it all. Who remembers ‘Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?’, a one season one episode show that aired in 2000?

A few things about that show that I found funny:

One, Rick Rockwell was the “multi-millionaire” who didn’t even have a million dollars. He was in real estate and he also did standup comedy but never quite achieved millionaire status. When journalists started investigating, they found his humble home and there was a toilet in his backyard.

The criticism Darva Conger got for winning was ridiculous. More than 22 million viewers tuned in to watch and they actually called her a “gold digger” as well as a “publicity whore” among many other things. I’m not saying they weren’t right but they watched the show. They were drawn to the train wreck for the mess it was and that in my book makes the viewers willing participants.

playboy, darva congerShe claimed that she had regrets of going on the show because of her morals but then she posed for ‘Playboy.’ She is a very beautiful lady and quite worthy of ‘Playboy’ but what morals was she talking about?

They were married officially that night on February 15, 2000 as part of the show. Their marriage was annulled by April 5. They went to Barbados for their honeymoon and Rick couldn’t finalize the deal. Darva told plenty of tabloids that they never consummated the marriage. Can you imagine being in a romantic place with your wife you just married and…nothing, absolutely nothing? An awkward vacation with plenty of miserable days and lonely nights.

And now, we have ‘The Bachelor’ which has been running now for 18 seasons. Only 2 marriages have come out of that show in all of those seasons. ‘The Bachelorette’ has produced 3 marriages out of 10 seasons. Haven’t they learned by now this is the worst way to meet someone and get serious?

All they’re doing is producing a line of guys who get treated special for a few months and then for the rest of their lives, they get to say, “Do you know who I am? I was the Bachelor in season 22.”

“Oh, you’re one of those. Good for you…”
